Positive and negative mental health

Mental health is “a person’s psychological and emotional well-being”.

It's not just about mental diseases, like depression, but also about positive mental health: how you can become mentally more resilient, nurture positive emotions, have positive self-talk, and much more.

There are many actions you could take to get better mental health. And there are habits you can start building so it will help you in the long term as well.

While many of us are stuck at home and often (more) alone during the Covid-19 period, it is harder to see the beauty of life and to be grateful for what we do have. If you lose your meaning in life, if you talk yourself down constantly or if you have barely any social activity going on, then you might feel down, lonely, or sometimes even depressed.

Whatever you do, don't let it go downhill! Find new ways to bond, to feel happy, or to have an outlook. Be mentally flexible to what life throws at you because it will keep doing so.

Luckily, there are many things that can keep you mentally healthy. Check out the following 12 tips below to see where you can make some improvements to boost your mental health.

12 Mental Power Tips:

  1. Live with a mission
From letting a big dream come true to watching your nephew grow up.

  2. Set goals and reward yourself
From training for a marathon to limiting alcohol during the week.

  3. Think positively and dismiss negative thoughts
Replace them when you acknowledge them because the mind perceives every thought as being real – especially when you feel the related emotion. Trick your brain into positivity!

  4. Live consciously
Enjoy small things/moments like sun rays, a good cup of coffee, a nice phone call, or an inspiring quote you read online. Mindful and by using all your senses.

  5. Express yourself and your emotions
Show who you are and share what you stand for. Dare to be vulnerable and be assertive.

  6. Take care of/manage friendships
Stay in touch with the people you care about and let them know you are thinking of them.

  7. Don’t worry too much
Every problem comes with a solution. They are meant to be solved.

  8. Tackle problems - they make you stronger
Don't slack. Don't let it slip. Take a deep breath and take action.

  9. Live healthily
Eat nutritious food, sleep well, exercise regularly.

  10. Do new things (or meet new people)
Feel excited about new opportunities and stories. They trigger your creativity and happiness.

  11. Be grateful for the things you already have and your progress
Keep a notebook and track what you're thankful for. For instance, how yummy lunch was or how funny that joke was. Don't wait for an end result (like a graduation or ending a project), because it will not be satisfying enough. Enjoy the process.

  12. Meditate. Meditation can be as simple as sitting with your thoughts for a few minutes. You can just observe the thoughts and don't follow them. What can help is focusing on the movement of your breath. Meditation creates more stillness within and more space between yourself and the mind chatter.
